Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002) was a Canadian painter and sculptor associated with abstract expressionism. He became known for his mosaic-like surfaces made with a palette knife, layering thick oil paint. His work combines spontaneous gesture with structured composition, later drawing inspiration from nature and northern landscapes.
